How Hugs Benefit Your Health

Hugs are a wholesome, loving gesture that not only feel good, but come with surprising health benefits.  It is a fact that all know newborn babies need held in order to survive.  What about as we grow older?  The hug, though still used quite often, needs a human comeback.

Here are 4 reasons to share a hug today:

1) Promotes Happiness
Hugs connect us with our own gift to self love.  When our bodies sense loving touch of another being (even animals), it stimulates our endorphins which increases serotonin levels resulting in a better mood, higher self awareness, and creating happiness.

2) Immunity Booster
Hugging generates a slight pressure on the sternum, creating an emotional charge that activates the Solar Plexus Chakra – the third Chakra located behind the navel that is know to stimulate immunity. This slight pressure on the sternum also ignites the thymus gland, which balances the body’s production of white blood cells, which help maintain health and combat disease.

3) Promotes Patience
We live in a busy world, and are consistently rushing to get to our next move without realizing the present moment.  By slowing down and taking a moment to offer sincere hugs throughout the day, we’re benefiting not only our own cultivation of patience, but passing it on with humanity by taking the time to show appreciation and love for each other.

4) Reduces Stress
Hugging releases oxytocin, a neurotransmitter that ignites the limbic system – the brain’s emotional axis which promotes feelings of gratificaion, reducing anxiety and stress.  When sharing a hug someone, oxytocin is released into our bodies by our pituitary gland, lowering both our heart rates and our cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone responsible for high blood pressure, heart disease and stress.
